Standards Committee Nears Finalization of Standard Revisions

The AGRSS® Council Inc.’s Standard Committee is in the process of voting on some possible changes to the Standard, and hopes to submit the Standard to ANSI for approval in the coming months, according to committee chair Bob Beranek of Automotive Glass Consultants.

“The biggest [revision] is the change of scope which basically says that our Standard is in support of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 208 and 212, which means it’s going to pertain to vehicles under 10,000 pounds,” he says.

“The big trucks, the semis, are not really going to be part of the Standard, mainly because they aren’t part of the FMVSS and we don’t feel that it’s our right to regulate to that.”

Another change will have to do with the Standard’s education requirements.

“Not just the technician is responsible for following the Standard, but all people that pertain to the installation process,” says Beranek.

“That includes buyers of glass and buyers of urethane. CSRs would have to be educated, managers would have to be educated—everyone in the auto glass shop that contributes to the installation process would have to be involved and would have to be educated.”

Beranek says the final release depends on both the vote and ANSI.

“Typically we can look for it in possible two to four months once it’s submitted,” says Beranek. “If everything votes cleanly, which I suspect it will, we expect to have it turned in really quickly and hopefully by end of summer it will be published and ready to go.”

  1. i guess all network employes and tpa’s will need to educated also . after all they are part of the process

  2. I agree with all of this, but what does this do to regulate the shops that are not registered. Are they held accountable to the same standards, or do they get to claim incompetence?
